The poverty trap

Bij de wortel
Poverty doesn't only mean a lack of money, it often coincides with social and political exclusion. Economist Dr Julia Swart examines if there is a way out.

'Sustainable Development Goal number one is to eradicate poverty. But how can that be achieved? Poor people have more problems than just a lack of money. Poverty traps people socially and politically as well. Often they haven't got the means for proper education and thus have less opportunities to work. This troublesome situation is then carried on to the next generation. Are poor people doomed to stay poor? Dr Julia Swart (Environmental & Resource Economics, UU) thinks there is a way out.
