Ramsey is een specialist op het gebied van Cognitive Neuroimaging(een ontwikkeling van technieken die de structuur toon van het brein en zijn cognitieve functies). Hij heeft een leerstoel aan het departement neurochirurgie (UMC Utrecht) op het gebied van cognitieve neurowetenschappen.

Na zijn promotie in Behavioural Pharmacology aan de medische faculteit van de Universiteit Utrecht in 1991, ontving hij fellowships bij theNational Institutes of Alcohol abuse and Alcoholism, and of MentalHealth in Bethesda, VS. Daarna werd hij universitair docent bij het UMC Utrecht. Ramsey werd benoemd tot hoofd van het functioneel MRI onderzoeksteam in 1996. Hij werd universitair hoofddocent bij het department neurochirurgie in 2006. In 2007 werd Ramsey voltijd professor bij het UMC Utrecht.

Zijn onderzoek richt zich momenteel op een systeem, gebaseerd op geïmplanteerde elektroden, dat ervoor zorgt dat verlamde patiënten apparaten kunnen besturen door middel van breinactiviteit.

Prof. dr. Nick Ramsey works as a full professor Neurosurgery at the Department Neurology at University Medical Center Utrecht.

Prof. dr. Nick Ramsey is a professor Neurosurgery and specialises in Cognitive Neuroimaging (the development of techniques that show the structure of the brain and its cognitive functions). Since 2007, he holds a chair at the Department Neurosurgery (UMC Utrecht) in the field of Cognitive Neuroscience.

After obtaining his doctorate's degree in Behavioural Pharmacology at the Medical Faculty of the Utrecht University in 1991, Ramsey received fellowships at the National Institutes of Alcohol abuse and Alcoholism, and of Mental Health in Bethesda USA. Afterwards, he started working as an Assistant Professor at the UMC Utrecht. He was appointed head of the functional MRI research unit in 1996, and Associate Professor at the Department of Neurosurgery in 2006. In 2007, Ramsey obtained full professorship at the UMC Utrecht.

His current research focuses on a system, based on implanted electrodes, that will empower paralysed patients to operate devices through the use of their brain activity.
