Hettinga’s research examines the ways in which non-normative embodiment is visualized by artists and activists. They focus on the intersection of trans and disability visual representation and argue that both transgender liberation and disability justice share corresponding subjects of concern regarding embodiment. By examining contemporary and cultural practices they investigated how the embodiment of disabled and transpersons is shaped and how this can be reimagined.
