Ypi specialises in political theory and justice.

Besides her academic work, she is known for her awardwinning novel Free: Growing Up at the End of History (2021), in which she uses her own childhood and family history in (post-)communist Albania to explore the meaning of freedom.

She is currently working on her new book Indignity(2025), in which she tries to reconstruct the life of her grandmother, who lived through the fall of the Ottoman Empire and rise of communism in Albania. What role do truth, dignity and reconciliation play in a post-conflict setting? In her forthcoming novel Ypi uses literature, history and fiction for a philosophical quest.

Prof. dr. Lea Ypi is hoogleraar politieke theorie aan de London School of Economics en universitair hoofddocent filosofie aan de Australian National University.

Naast haar academische werk werd ze bekend met haar prijswinnende roman Vrij: Opgroeien aan het einde van de geschiedenis (2021). Daarin onderzoekt ze aan de hand van haar eigen jeugd en familiegeschiedenis in (post-)communistisch Albanië wat vrijheid betekent.

Momenteel werkt ze aan haar nieuwe boek Indignity (2025), waarin ze het leven van haar oma, die de val van het Ottomaanse Rijk en opkomst van het communisme in Albanië meemaakte, probeert te reconstrueren. Welke rol spelen waarheid, waardigheid en vergeving in een post-conflictsetting? Opnieuw gebruikt ze hierin literatuur, geschiedenis en fictie voor een filosofische zoektocht.
