Wagemakers specialises in the intellectual history of modern Islam, and studies the ideological development of Salafism and Islamism. He has published a number of publications on the topic, including A Quietist Jihadi: The ideology and Influence of Abu Muhammad al-Maqdisi (2012), and Salafism in Jordan: Political Islam in a Quietist Community (2016). He also studied the intellectual history of the Muslim Brotherhood in Jordan. In 2024 he published a book about Hamas, where he places the Palestinian Islamist militant organization in a historical perspective.

He is also a member of the Utrecht Young Academy, a platform for the exchange of critical perspectives on academia, policy and society in Utrecht and beyond.

Dr. Joas Wagemakers is universitair hoofddocent Islam en Arabisch aan de afdeling Filosofie en Religiewetenschappen van de Universiteit Utrecht.

Zijn onderzoek richt zich voornamelijk op salafisme en islamisme, en in het bijzonder de ideologische ontwikkeling hiervan. Hij is geïnteresseerd in de intellectuele geschiedenis van de moderne Islam, met een focus op politiek denken onder islamisten. Wagemakers heeft veelvuldig gepubliceerd, waaronder A Quietist Jihadi: The Ideology and Influence of Abu Muhammad al-Maqdisi (2012) en Salafism in Jordan: Political Islam in a Quietist Community (2016). Hij deed o.a. hij onderzoek naar de intellectuele geschiedenis van de Moslim Broederschap in Jordanië. In 2024 publiceerde hij een boek over Hamas, waarin hij de Palestijnse islamistische militante organisatie in historisch perspectief plaatst.

Wagemakers is lid van de Utrecht Young Academy, een groep jonge en ambitieuze academici van de Universiteit Utrecht.
