In 2007 was Hans Alma de eerste vrouw die rector magnificus werd aan een Nederlandse universiteit, namelijk aan de Universiteit voor Humanistiek in Utrecht. Zij is tevens professor in de culturele psychologie aan deze instelling. Haar onderzoeksgebieden zijn de rol van creativiteit en verbeeldingskracht in de ontwikkeling van identiteit en de relatie tussen esthetica en de betekenis van het leven. Zij relateert deze gebieden aan educatie en organisatie. Hoe cultiveert educatie de verbeeldingskracht van jongeren in onze complexe maatschappij? Hoe gebruiken organisaties creativiteit en esthetica om hun doelen te bereiken. En hoe kunnen we onze verbeelding gebruiken om samen naar een eerlijkere en menselijke samenleving te werken? Met haar lessen en onderzoek raakt zij mensen met een verschillende achtergrond: zowel managers als spiritueel adviseurs, artiesten en CEO's, kerkgangers en atheïsten. Ze is vooral geïnteresseerd in hoe globalisatie mensen raakt en wat hen beweegt om samen te werken naar een meer open en tolerante samenleving. Alma is een advocaat voor wetenschappelijk onderzoek dat deze issues centraal stelt en zo bijdraagt aan de maatschappij en het publieke debat.

In 2007, Hans Alma was the first woman to become rector magnificus of a Dutch university: the University of Humanistic Studies in Utrecht. She is also professor of cultural psychology at this university. Her main fields of research are the role of creativity and imagination in identity development and the relationship between aesthetics and meanings of life. She relates these fields to educational and organizational practices. How does education cultivate the imagination of young people in our complex society? How do organizations make use of creativity and aesthetics to realize their goals? And how can we use our imagination to work together towards a more just and humane society? With her teaching and research she addresses groups with different backgrounds: both managers and spiritual counsellors, artists and CEOs, church members as well as atheist humanists. She is especially interested in how globalization affects people and what enables them to work together towards a more open, tolerant society. Alma is an advocate for scientific research that addresses these issues and contributes to social practices and public debate.
