His research particularly focuses on how indigenous art forms (such as music, cinema and performance art) and digital activism can help bring the culture and language of Indigenous peoples back to life.

For this research, Llanes Ortiz creates collaborations with NGOs and Indigenous organizations, such as those of the Yucatec Maya in Mexico, the Wayana in Surinam and the Kichwa in Ecuador.

Llanes Ortiz completed a PhD in social anthropology at the University of Sussex, UK. Prior, he was trained as a social anthropologist at the Universidad Autónoma de Yucatan in Mexico.

Llanes Ortiz is universitair docent erfgoed van Inheemse volkeren en archeologie aan de Universiteit Leiden. In zijn onderzoek vraagt hij zich af hoe Inheemse kunststromingen (muziek, film, performance art) en digitaal activisme kunnen helpen om de taal en cultuur van Inheemse volkeren te doen herleven.

Voor zijn onderzoek organiseert Llanes Ortiz veel samenwerkingen met ngo’s en Inheemse organisaties, zoals die van de Yucatec Maya in Mexico, de Wayana in Suriname en de Kichwa in Ecuador.
