Zijn interesse richt zich met name op mondiale milieupolitiek, met een nadruk op klimaatoverleg, VN-hervormingen, global adaptation governance, publiek-private governancemechanismen, de rol van wetenschap, Noord-Zuidbetrekkingen en handels- en milieuconflicten. Biermann bedacht het concept earth system governance en is voorzitter van een mondiaal langetermijnsonderzoek op dit gebied.

Verder houdt Biermann zich bezig met onderzoeksmanagement. Aan het Institute for Environmental Studies aan de VU was hij hoofd van het departement Environmental Policy Analysis. In 2007 werd hij aangesteld als directeur-generaal van de Netherlands Research School for Socio-Economic and Natural Sciences of the Environment (SENSE.NL), een nationaal onderzoeks- en onderwijsnetwerk van negen onderzoeksinstituten met ongeveer vierhonderd promovendi. Biermann is ook oprichtend directeur van het Europese onderzoeksnetwerk Global Governance Project (GLOGOV.ORG). Op internationaal gebied is hij voorzitter van het Earth System Governance Project, een tienjarig internationaal onderzoeksproject van de International Human Dimensions Programme on Global Environmental Change.

Prof. dr. Frank Biermann is a professor of Global Sustainability Governance at the Copernicus Institute for Sustainable Development at Utrecht University.

He is interested in the study of global environmental politics, with emphasis on climate negotiations, UN reform, global adaptation governance, public-private governance mechanisms, the role of science, North-South relations, and trade and environment conflicts. Biermann has pioneered the concept of 'earth system governance' and chairs a global long-term research programme in this field.

He is also active in research management. At the Institute for Environmental Studies of the VU Amsterdam, he heads the Department of Environmental Policy Analysis. In 2007, he was also appointed director-general of the Netherlands Research School for Socio-Economic and Natural Sciences of the Environment (SENSE.NL), a national research and teaching network of nine research institutes with about 400 PhD students. Biermann is also the founding director of the European research network Global Governance Project (GLOGOV.ORG). Internationally, he chairs the Earth System Governance Project, a ten-year international core research project of the International Human Dimensions Programme on Global Environmental Change.
