Depledge researches in the areas of political geography, international relations and security studies. He specialises in the geopolitical changes ongoing the Arctic and Northern Europe. He also has an interest in Antarctica, as well as the geopolitical implications of climate change more broadly.

Depledge has used his research and expertise to provide advice to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, the Ministry of Defence, the European Commission and NATO. He also established the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for the Polar Regions Secretariat, serving as its director from 2015 until 2019. Depledge continues to work as Senior Adviser to the group.

He published the book Britain and the Arctic (2018), about the increasing geopolitical significance of the Arctic and the contemporary British interest and activity in the region.
