Te Brömmelstroet's research focuses on urban mobility futures. He is interested in how our thinking about mobility futures is structured through underlying narratives. In his work, cycling plays a big role as a lens to study these narratives and to find new ones. Together with journalist Thalia Verkade, he wrote the book Het recht van de snelste (2020) in which they discuss traffic and the public space.

Te Brömmelstroet is Chairman of the Board of the Urban Cycling Institute that is a part of the Centre for Urban Studies. The Institute leads research into the relations between cycling, society and cities and is also actively involved in international dissemination of Dutch cycling knowledge. Het onderzoek van Te Brömmelstroet richt zich op toekomsten van stedelijke mobiliteit. Hij is geïnteresseerd in hoe ons denken over mobiliteit wordt beïnvloed door onderliggende verhalen. Om deze verhalen te bestuderen en nieuwe te vinden gebruikt hij vaak de fiets als lens. Samen met journalist Thalia Verkade schreef hij in 2020 het boek Het recht van de snelste, waarin ze op zoek gingen naar een antwoord op de vraag: van wie is de straat?

Te Brömmelstroet is bestuursvoorzitter van het Urban Cycling Institute dat onderdeel is van het Centre for Urban Studies. Het instituut doet onderzoek naar de relatie tussen fietsen, samenleving en steden en is ook actief betrokken bij de verspreiding van de Nederlandse fietskennis.
