Kanfash focuses on the relationships between state and society in post-conflict areas in Syria, and specifically the role of local intermediaries in the process of reconstruction and state-return. As a humanitarian practitioner and academic, he also researches the impact that sanctions have on humanitarian operations, food security and access to water. 

Furthermore, Kanfash is the founder of Damaan, a Syrian-Dutch humanitarian organization that provides humanitarian aid in Syrian areas under the control of the rebels.

Mohammad Kanfash is promovendus bij de Conflict Studies Groep van de Universiteit Utrecht, waar hij ook onderwijs- en onderzoeksfuncties bekleedt.

Kanfash richt zich op de relaties tussen staat en samenleving in post-conflictgebieden in Syrië. Hij is hierbij vooral geïnteresseerd in de rol van lokale tussenpersonen in het proces van wederopbouw. Als humanitair medewerker en academicus onderzoekt hij daarnaast de impact van sancties op humanitaire operaties, voedselzekerheid en toegang tot water. 

Verder is Kanfash de oprichter van Damaan, een Syrisch-Nederlandse humanitaire organisatie die humanitaire hulp verleent in Syrische gebieden die onder controle staan van de rebellen.
