Murphy’s research area is mostly focused on interoception, which is the body’s sensing of internal stimuli such as hunger and stress, and its relevance to health and disease. She is particularly interested in the differences between individuals in how accurately they can perceive their body’s signals. What are the differences between men and women? How do these differences emerge during development? And how do they relate to mental and physical health?

Murphy completed her PhD at King’s College London in 2019. For her PhD she studied the measuring technology of interoception, and the relationship between interoception, health and higher order cognition.

Murphy’s onderzoeksgebied is vooral gericht op interoceptie, dat is het aanvoelen van signalen uit het lichaam zoals honger en stress, en de relevantie ervan voor gezondheid en ziekte. Ze is vooral geïnteresseerd in de verschillen tussen individuen in hoe nauwkeurig ze de signalen interpreteren. Wat zijn de verschillen tussen man en vrouw? Hoe ontstaan deze verschillen tijdens de ontwikkeling? En hoe verhouden ze zich tot mentale en fysieke gezondheid?

Murphy promoveerde in 2019 aan King's College London. Voor haar proefschrift bestudeerde ze hoe interoceptie te meten is, en het verband tussen interoceptie, gezondheid en sociaal bewustzijn.
