The science of superheroes

Pop Culture Matters
How can sci-fi inspire scientists and vice versa? With physicist Dr Barry Fitzgerald.

Superhero films have been popular ever since the first Superman instalment. Their impressive display of tricks and powers push the boundaries of what is scientifically possible. Physicist Dr Barry Fitzgerald (TU Delft) studies how realistic these blockbusters are. Guess what? We might be closer to actually having superpowers than ever before. Iron Man's suit, Wolverine's accelerated healing powers and Spider-Man's web slingers: current research shows that they may be part of our (near) future. What are the implications of the advancement and integration of superpowers for modern society?
